![]() ![]() Nexus is a massive amount of Etrian Odyssey in one game with a ton of areas to map and classes to experiment with, but as a big celebratory title it may not be the easiest to start with. Ⅴ's classes might be even better and I really like the specialization system it uses, but the story just sort of peters out later in the game so you wind up beating the end boss just because it happens to be there. I like Ⅳ's story progression, its class variety, subclasses that aren't too unbalanced and it's probably the easiest to start with. So the tl dr is that you really can't go wrong with any of the 3DS games, though EO2U and Nexus might be a little overwhelming due to the humongous amount of class options available in those games. My ranking for recommendations for a first time player would be: 4 > 5 > EOU > EO2U > Nexus > 3 > 2 > 1 ![]() My personal ranking as a long time fan would be: 4 > Nexus > EO2U > 5 > EOU > 3 > 2 > 1 Like I still love this game and think it's worth playing, but I absolutely would not recommend it to a first time EO player now that there's so many other options to pick from.ĭon't bother with 1 and 2 at this point, especially 1. The game balance is so poor that nearly every single offensive class uses the same build by the end of the game (class's signature physical nuke + charge), even the mage class! Status ailments are useless, you're punished heavily for experimentation (resetting your spent stat points cost 5 levels instead of only 2 like in the newer games), random battles become braindead simple once you unlock a skill that lets you null an entire line's MP consumption. For what it's worth I think the story mode in this one is actually a lot better than Untold 2's even though it's still not exactly great.ģ has wonderful atmosphere and music but the battle mechanics are a complete disaster. It suffers even more than 2 Untold does from poor design decisions (even more story mode gated content and a horrifically grindy grimoire stones system) but it's still a fun game. Definitely worth a playthrough but I wouldn't recommend it as your first game.ġ Untold is ok. That's not really an issue for a new player though.Ģ Untold is really great in some ways but it has some weird design decisions (and a poor story mode that requires a playthrough to see all the content) that drag it down. I still liked them, moreso Nexus, but the formula felt like it was getting stale by the time these games came out. Sidequest design is pretty poor in both (moreso in 5) and they're almost entirely focused on dungeon crawling due to the excision of the minigames that other games in the series have used to break the pace a bit (sailing in 3, skyship in 4, cafe in 2 Untold). Just a really enjoyable and balanced game with fantastic music and dungeon design.ĥ and Nexus are pretty good but are lacking in some ways.
